Neo Pixel LED Ring Battery

Post by JamesTransueAZ »

I built the chromakey LED light ring. It is powered by a USB cord, but I would like to power it with regular batteries(triple-a or button cell). How can I attach a battery compartment to the circuit board?

For reference, here is a link to the build instruction. It is a QT Py board with a rotary encoder inserted into the GND, MO, A1, A1, A3, and the LED ring attached to the 3v, MI, and GND on the board.

Can you use a USB battery pack? I ask because a coin cells would not be able to provide nearly enough current and AAA's would quickly be depleted if not also underpowered with a 24 LED ring. This ring can draw up to 1.44A

I tried using a 3 different portable USB chargers I had available. They all powered the ring for about 37 seconds before they stopped supplying power.
I suspect because they are phone chargers they might have some mechanism to prevent battery damage from overcharging by shutting off when the power being drawn drops below a certain amount. I am not certain this is the case, but since a USB plugged into a wall adapter can power the ring indefinitely, I wanted to attach a battery I knew would provide a constant power supply without shutting off. I tried looking for battery to USB adapters, but I haven't found one yet.

I am relatively new at making electronics like this, so please clarify if I misunderstand something.

When you run off a wall USB power supply can you tell how much current that provides?

We sell two kinds of USB battery packs. Some are 1A others are 2A. The 2A would meet your needs and the 1A would not be sufficient.

The 2A battery has arrived, and so far appears to be working as I'd like. Thank you for your help!
