TXB0104 Level converter - what a great chip!

by isonno on Sat Mar 05, 2011 6:06 pm

While completing a project recently I ran into a couple places where my 3.3V MCU needed to talk to some 5V peripherals. Some extensive web surfing turned up the TI TXB0104. What a great chip! Just hook it up to the 3.3 and 5V power supplies, and connect it between your devices. It provides four independent level converting channels. It takes care of figuring out which way the I/O is going, so you can use the channels for either input to or output from your device - it "does the right thing" on the fly.

My only gripe is it's only available in breadboard unfriendly SOIC/TSSOP/BGA packages - no DIP. Somebody (hint hint!) should put this on a breakout board for less than $10 - it's a very handy tool to have hanging around your breadboard.

Very nice find. Though I do want to point out that they also have 6 and 8 bit versions. I kind of wish I had known about this before I completed my last project, it might have allowed me to eliminate the need for an extra chip, though it looks to be a bit bigger than what I used. Anyway, I definitely second having a breakout board for these :)

only thing i noticed is that these are not going to work for i2c translation which kinda defeats the purpose but we'll look for something else that does!

Would those work for converting the output from an arduino tx pin to 3.3v for an xbee rx pin??? i've been looking for a chip that can do that rather than using the buffer chip.

yes, a buffer chip is cheaper tho. this is best for bidirectional, not unidirectional

They recommend the related TXS series for use with open-drain drivers.

Wow - it's not often a bit of wishful thinking in a forum post turns into a finished product!
