Dashboard blocks disappear with Safari IOS

Post by davesdome »

This problem only appears when using Safari on my iPhone or iPad. Dashboard blocks can jump to new locations or disappear entirely. I don’t experience this with Safari on MacOS or Windows browsers.

I had contacted the Adafruit IO team about the sidebar not showing up and they opened an issue. It was easily replaceable.

Can you post screenshots from your browser and phone highlighting the discrepancy you are seeing?

The first photo shows a correct rendering (sometimes things seem to work correctly). The second photo shows the problem which is more typical of what I see. After seeing the correctly rendered page, I refreshed the page and got the faulty rendering. Subsequent refreshes mostly continue to be faulty. Sometimes I’ll get a correct rendering again.

Thank you for these screen shots.

I'll ask adafruitio to comment.

Also can you please add:
1) iOS versions
2) phone / ipad models
3) Does chrome display the blocks correctly on the above devices?

Hello davesdome! Sorry you're having this issue, I'd like to help. I haven't been able to reproduce this yet, but I can see some permissions errors related to this dashboard and its feeds.

When your blocks aren't appearing, can you confirm that you are logged in at that time? (Touch the little "hamburger menu" and make sure it says "Hello, [Your Name]" (not "sign up or log in" or whatever.)

You might also toy with "privacy" and "sharing" settings for the dashboard and its feeds. I wondering if, for instance, the problem goes away entirely if the dashboard and all its feeds are set to "public" visibility.

Also, what happens if you rotate the phone to landscape mode? (Dashboard should do a re-layout for a larger canvas size, but maybe we'll see some block visibility change for a clue.)

To be clear, this is mere experimentation to help us narrow down the issue. When we figure out what's happening we'll fix it and you won't have to do such shenanigans. I'm only asking because it might be very helpful to the debugging process.

Thanks!

I have the same problem also on Mac 17.7.2, Safari 17.2.1. I have the problems on iPad and iPhone, both on 17.3. The first block is always present.

To answer some previous questions…

- The iPhone 13 Pro is running iOS version 17.3
- The iPad Pro (4th gen) is running the same version.
- Chrome on the iPad also exhibits this behavior.

- I’m logged into the account when the problem presents.
- I did discover that rotating to horizontal on the iPhone does resolve this issue and if I then rotate back to vertical the blocks continue to be visible until I refresh the page, then the problem presents once again.
- Experimenting with rotation on the iPad doesn’t resolve the issue.
- Making all feeds public doesn’t resolve issue.

I think we may have just fixed this! Could someone give it a test and let us know?

We finally reproduced the issue and chased it down. As of 5 minutes ago it no longer occurs on the iOS and macOS versions of Safari where we isolated it.

Thank you so much for your patience on this insidious issue, everyone. We'll keep an eye on this post in case there's more to be done.

patrikkpaul You'll need to provide more detail if you'd like me to look into something for you.
