Can't get trinket talking with Arduino IDE

Post by doug_p »

Trinket troubles
I tried to follow the procedures for getting a Trinket going but I’ve gone off the rails somewhere.
Attempting this on a Win10 machine.
First question – does Trinket work with Arduino IDE 2.x.x ? Or, does it only work with IDE 1.x.x ?
I think I got the bootloader installed but can’t say for sure. I've attached several screenshots of things I hope are relevant to getting this going.

The trinket is plugged in to a USB port and blinks for a time when powered up or reset.

Adafruit installer 2.5.0.0 has run successfully.

I also installed in Arduino IDE 2.3.2 and can compile but on download message “A programmer is required to upload” appears.

Let me know what, if any, additional information or screenshots would be useful.

I'm pretty wrapped around the axle with this and I don't know exactly what questions to ask.
Any guidance to a solution gratefully accepted.

When you look at the com ports in the Windows device manager do you see the Trinket? Does it disappear when it is removed?

Hi @Franklin97355!

Does it disappear when it is removed?

Yes. Trinket appears under libusb-win32 devices when connected - as shown above. This disappears when Trinket disconnected - as shown below.

Just to confirm: you have an old AT85 based Trinket as specified by the board setting?

I don't know about old vs. new but it looks just like the one being held. It has 'T85' printed on the chip.

That's the old one. I.e. Not the Trinket M0.

I'll point out the deprication warning you might have missed:
Deprecation Warning: The Trinket bit-bang USB technique it uses doesn't work as well as it did in 2014, many modern computers won't work well. So while we still carry the Trinket so that people can maintain some older projects, we no longer recommend it. Please check out the Trinket M0. It has built-in USB, more capabilities, and is comparable in price!
So, getting it working (well, ot at all) via USB is a challenge.

Unlike the Pro Trinkets, you don't have the option on using an FTDI connection to program it.

My advise is to get a Trinket M0 instead: https://www.adafruit.com/product/3500 unless there is a compelling reason to the the AT85 Trinket. You'll have a far better experience.

As for Arduino 2... Arduino 1.8.x is worth a try. In my experience it works better. But, as I understand it, the Trinket problem is a hardware one.

Yes, I did totally miss that.

Do you think Adafruit might take back the one I've got?

Thanks for that, I'm quite comfortable with 1.8.x

I got the thumbs up from Limor for this.

Please email [email protected] with a link to this thread, your order number, and ask about returning the Trinket.

Great! Thanks again! I'll get an M0 and start from there.
