1578 Battery - Can I charge this through any board?

Post by KingMango »

I have a ADAFRUIT INDUSTRIES 1578 Lithium Ion Polymer Battery - 3.7v 500mAh
1. Will that battery charge if connected to my GEMMA MO board and the board to a computer? (or any board?)
Or do I need a special charger?
2. How long do I charge it for?
3. Is there a danger of overcharging?
Thanks!

The Gemma M0 does not have a built-in battery charger.

Adafruit has lots of charger modules for their batteries.
Examples:
USB-C https://www.adafruit.com/product/4410
USB-micro https://www.adafruit.com/product/1904

The Gemma M0 will run from USB power while you have it connected to a computer or other USB host.
If you disconnect the USB cable, it will run from a battery.

No, the GEMMA M0 does not have battery charging.
(or any board?)
Depends on the board. Some boards, like the Feather line, have built in battery charging capability.

For some other boards, there are add-on's that can be used. Like the lipo BFF for QT PY boards:

Or do I need a special charger?
You need a lipo charger.

2. How long do I charge it for?
Depends on the capacity of the battery and the charge rate of the charger.
3. Is there a danger of overcharging?
A good lipo charger should take care of this and not over charge.
