Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 cannot load demo (only lights up random red LEDs)

I'm pretty new to all of this so I may be doing something wrong but am also wondering if perhaps an item is defective.

I purchased:
1 x 64x32 RGB LED Matrix - 6mm pitch[ID:2276]
1 x Adafruit Matrix Portal S3 CircuitPython Powered Internet

I liked that the S3 is supposed to come with a demo compatible with a 64x32 matrix so I could immediately see the LEDs in working condition. However, after connecting a USB power and data cable, all I see are a few red LEDs:

What I've tried so far:
1. I tried 4 different USB data and power cables and power adapters (from basic 5 watt ones to those used for a macbook)
2. I successfully reset the firmware using https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-mat ... ir-3107941 but the behavior is the same after having done so

Am I missing something? For now I just want to confirm that the portal and LED matrix are functional by loading the demo.

Please post a photo of the backside of the RGB matrix with the Matrix Portal attached.
