Test sequence fails

Post by Keldin »

Just finished a spokepov and on inserting the batteries (2 batteries - yellow LEDs) it starts the test sequence on the battery side and 2 LEDs light up but the 3rd one does not and the sequence stops and I get a single lit LED on one side and 2 on the other staying on.
Does the final lit LED locations provide some hint as to the fault?
I cannot see any bad solders and tried replacing the 3rd LED that failed to light without success.
What should I be looking for
Thanks

Please post clear, detailed pictures of both sides of the spokePOV, showing your assembly and soldering.

That looks pretty good. There's not a lot that can go wrong with these. Make sure that all of the chips are installed the right way around. It looks that way from the pictures, but there are a few that I can't see. Double-check the LEDs, too. The flat sides should all be oriented the same way.

Unfortunately, the lights left on after the self-test aren't really a diagnostic. They don't tell you what's wrong.

Everything is the correct way around.
The LEDs all seem good and I swapped out the 3rd one.
Does the fact that it's the 3rd led in the sequence that fails to light and the sequence is interrupted provide any clue as to where to look for failed parts? If not then from what you say there's really no option but to bin it which seems like a waste.

It seems like the problem would have to be in either IC3 or IC4. You can try swapping those out, if you like. Meanwhile, we should probably send you a new kit. Please email [email protected] with a link to this thread for a replacement spokePOV

Managed to replicate (and solve) the problem as described here.

The LED pattern as described appeared on one I've just built and kitted myself. The firmware on the ATTiny2313 used was the "hacked" version from the software page. I was able to get it to "go away" by waving a magnet in front of the hall effect sensor.

Replacing the code on the ATTiny with the v1.1 standard .hex file returned the LED test as described in the build instructions.
