Consistently inconsistent charging with solar lipo & minty v

Post by cjkershner »

Hi all, I'm looking for some help on an issue I'm encountering with my current project.

This is my second MintyBoost build (the first was vanilla AAs) and I wanted to switch to solar. I bought and soldered the USB/DC/solar lipo charger v2 and MintyBoost v3, as well as a 6V 1W solar panel and a 3.7V 1200mAh lipo battery.

Here's what's happening:

- For test purposes, I'm charging the lipo via USB until the DONE light appears, after which I disconnect the USB.
- I connect the MintyBoost to LOAD via JST.
- USB power on the MintyBoost reads ~4.97V on the multimeter.
- I connect my old iPhone 4S, which begins to charge.

The issue:

- When I connect my current Samsung Galaxy S8 to the MintyBoost, it recognizes/charges for a split second then stops.
- If I reconnect the iPhone 4S to the MintyBoost, it no longer charges.
- Nothing will register until I fully recharge the lipo via USB.

I soldered the D+ and D- pins on the Minty USB together to see if the S8 needed a USB spec charger, but D-pins separate or together didn't change the results.

So all the Adafruit components in the system seem to work correctly, and I suspect the issue is with the S8, but I don't know what's happening, why, or how I should proceed.
