Hi Nick,

Please find attached pictures of the TOP side of the Bluefruit Friend modules which I received instead of Bluefruit Sniffer devices. I will attempt to identify the firmware, but had no luck just now as I moved to a different PC instead of my laptop.

Thanks in advance for your timely response. I will follow up with the additional information as soon as possible.

Hi Michael,

Please send photos of the top-sides of the modules for our team to review.

As noted in the New Products video for both the Sniffer and Friend, they look identical; the firmware loaded on the devices is different. Are you able to show the firmware on your devices is for the Friend and not the Sniffer? You should get some error when following the Sniffer Learn Guide for setup.

If you require technical assistance with this procedure a separate team of engineers provides technical assistance in the forums. They have extensive experience with our products, and are better equipped to guide these steps. Visit http://www.adafruit.com/forums/ to post your technical support request.

Hi,

I received two Bluefruit LE Friend modules instead of two Bluefruit LE Sniffers. See attached photo.

I am willing to keep the two Friend modules and and credit the difference towards receiving the two Sniffer module. I would like to use the difference in price paid towards purchase of two P2269 Sniffer devices and pay the difference required separately (PayPal and USPS Priority).

I would like to get the replacements as soon as possible, but understand storm will delay things. Let me know how this can be worked out.

Thanks for your help in advance!

Want to make sure I've read through and am understanding the issue correctly - you think you have a Bluefruit LE Friend (PID 2267) instead of a Bluefruit LE Sniffer (PID 2269)?

Yes.

Actually, the quantity is two of the BLE Friends instead of two BLE Sniffers. The pink-logoed ESD bags are labeled as P2269 (under bar-code). Front and back pic's of each black PCB's show white screen-print labels - 'Bluefruit LE Friend.'

When I run the nRF sniffer tools, it detects firmware as 'out of date' as mentioned. (It is likely a good thing that that update does not work, eh?)

I will order two more 'Sniffers' - if I can be sure to receive credit for the price difference I paid on this invoice.

Finally, thanks for reading through everything. Sorry for not scrubbing email thread better. I just assumed none of that thread would be available to reviewers here.

That's the correct PID for the Sniffer. The hardware is identical between the two products. The difference is in the firmware. It's even possible (but not recommended) to go back and forth:
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... faqs#faq-2

This is known. See the red text box in this section of the guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... fer-target

It seems like you've probably got the correct product (based on the PID on the bags). Try carefully going through the guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... troduction
and when you hit a road block there, post the info back here.

Thank you for spotting my errors. I looked more closely at the instructions and the first image does indeed show the same white screen-printing identifying the base module as a 'Friend!'

So, I repeated all the steps from scratch. I confirmed Silicon Labs UART driver, nRF Sniffer, and Wireshark versions. I then changed versions as I attempted to replicate the examples. This is what I finally observed using the nRF8001 breakout (which was similar to Bluefruit LE Shield devices).

Basically, I see Bluetooth LE traffic, which I could confirm by renaming the nRF8001 as 'NEWNAME" via Arduino sketch. But, there seems to be a protocol problem using the 'blte' filter.

I'll try the whole thing again after uninstalling all the software again, but I seem to just be repeating myself. Any thoughts?

Can you elaborate on this further? Exactly what's not working?

Both Sniffers I ordered do not appear to capture the messaging between my Adafruit iPad (and iPhone) app; and my Arduino-connected nRF8001 breakout (or Adafruit Bluefruit Shield using similar Arduino test program).

Please notice that the "blte" filter is enabled (green color) versus the previous picture I sent the other day. In the previous snippets, I showed the traffic I captured after I cleared the "blte" filter. In this latest instance, I ran Wireshark for tens of thousands of packets, but none seemed to show up under using the "blte" filter as in the example in the instructions.

Is the difference clearer? Wireshark traffic is not being captured as expected. I've not yet stumbled on why not. So, I would appreciate any insight you might give me about next move. Thanks!

ok well the good news is you absolutely have the correct hardware and firmware. so thats *not* the issue

remove the btle filter, do you get *any* ble packet data then? you might want to use an example arduino program that sends packets every second so you can make sure there's data to sniff

With the sniffer firmware (which comes from Nordic, not from us ... we don't have access to the source code to make any changes), you sometimes need to make a few connection attempts before Wireshark can sniff packets post connection. This is described in the first FAQ here: https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing- ... faqs#faq-1
When I connect to a Central device, I don't see any connection data, but when I disconnect I see the advertising packets again. How do I capture data with a connected peripheral?

This is a limitation of the sniffer firmware from Nordic. Advertising in Bluetooth Low Energy happens on three dedicated channels, each running at it's own frequency. For the sniffer to 'follow' the connection it needs to be looking at the right channel when the connection happens, and there is a 2/3 chance that it is looking at another channel at any given moment.

To capture the connection and see data exchanges post connection, you may need to connect several times until the channels are aligned between the sniffer and the BLE peripheral+central devices.

Hi,

Thanks for the FAQ with the explanation.

As in the example screenshot, I do indeed see advertisement from my nRF8001 Breakout and Bluefruit Shield, - just nothing filtered through "blte" in Wireshark. So, if it is a connection issue, my success rate is 0% for sniffer despite being able to achieve nearly 100% connectivity to both the Breakout and Shield attached to Arduino UNO; and using the Adafruit IOS app. As for detection via the Nordic app, I changed the nRF8001 breakout name to "Ada1ble." It shows up in the sniffer list almost all the time (>90%) on first try. Again, it seems the traffic containing data is what I am unable to connect to. Seems too weird. Any final suggestions how to improve the connection odds?

Respectfully,

Michael

I'm not sure what's happening here, except to make me wonder if there is some sort of version conflict with the plugin being used in Wireshark or something? You have a 1 in 3 chance of 'catching' the connection process, so it takes several tries to sniff the all important connection process that allows you to see what happens are you connect. But it after a dozen or so tries it's never catching, that seems really strange and it's not something I've seen myself.

How many times did you try to capture the connect event?

Hi,

I finally got my sniffers working. Thanks for the many suggestions. Here is what I found.

I performed an install of everything on a less "powerful" Windows 10 laptop. It worked right away. I then experimented to recreate the "unknown" messages, which led me to suspect either "BT LE LL" or "nordic_ble" protocols.

Moving back to work on my tower PC, I performed diagnostics on my RAID SSD's and memory, but found no problems. So, I simply relocated everything to a new directory - and voila! Shocking!

Thanks again for all the recommendations. If I can find out more about my issue, I'll pass it on. In the meantime I am now up and running with the sniffer too! (Lesson learned by me - I should have tried another PC sooner!)

Best regards,

Michael
