Pre- Completion Test - Hot chip

Post by gettothechoppa »

Hi guys,

I've recently tried to build one of these Mintyboost thingies but when plugging the chip in [notch up etc], it get super hot within a second or so.

Checked continuity and count ten points on the ground which seems to make sense from the shematic.....
Pictures of the back attached if somebody could help me!

Some of your solders could use a touch-up but there don't seem to be any shorts. Take a look at this Soldering Guide for some help. Can you post a picture of the other side?

Of course, thanks for your help!
Do those poor soldering joints means that there could be a short somewhere? I can't theoretically figure out why the chip would be getting so hot hmmm...

Any ideas why that would be the case?

I'm reluctant to start blaming the components before I blame my skills lol!

Thanks,

Alun.

I'm suspicious that the solder joint on the resistor under the IC casing is causing a short - from the picture what do you think?

It could be. The solder didn't flow completely and I'm not sure where that wire out the top of the solder goes but it looks like it is keeping the socket from fully seating on the board.
