eTape Waterproofing

Post by efeigenbaum »

Do you have any suggestions regarding ways to waterproof the pin connections for the eTape water level sensor? My students want to use it in a water bottle. Could I use Hot Glue on the pins? What about the little notch above the words"Max" Can that get wet?

We could 3D print a holder for it if need be that would protect the top of the tape with the metal pins.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

You could protect the pins with hot-glue, E6000 adhesive or an electronics-safe grade of silicone sealant. A 3D-printed shroud would be a good alternative as well.

The hole above the "Max" line is a vent. It has a membrane to protect against brief exposure to liquid, but should not be immersed.
From the manufacturer's application note: https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/eTapeApp.pdf
Do not submerge the sensor beyond the “Max” line to
prevent the vent hole from being submerged. The vent hole allows the eTape to equilibrate with
atmospheric pressure and must not be submerged in the fluid to work properly. The vent hole is fitted
with a hydrophobic filter membrane to prevent the eTape from being swamped if inadvertently
submerged
