Magtag with a detached usb-c connector

Post by littlefish »

The situation is that my usb-c connector has come off, cleanly, no pads are pulled up.
I guess I did not realize that I was stressing it, but now that it is off, What can i do to fix?

Can you post a clear photo of the USB connector area of the board.

hopefully enough detail :) and FYI I have a good quality soldering iron, but I'm just not sure if I have a chance at success?

Is there a down side to my trying to fix this? I could put it in place and try heating those tiny pins with an iron. Also, I'd add solder to the through-hole physical pins.
Just checking what you think and if you have any advice on technique.

Use plenty of flux. It dissolves oxides, forms a barrier between the molten solder and air, and keeps the solder as liquid as possible.

At SMD scale the surface tension of the molten solder is the dominant force, and all SMD parts are designed to take advantage of it. If you have the right amount of solder and it's clean, good joints will form automatically. That makes hand-soldering much easier than it seems. You can add extra solder to make sure you have plenty, then pull the excess away with solder wick to eliminate blobs and bridges between pins. You can get excellent joints with surprisingly little effort.
