Dead CAP1188

Post by mullaneywt »

I think I received a CAP1188 breakout board with a dead IC. The board does nothing and is not detected via I2C or software SPI off a test UNO, the LEDs never light, and the LED pins all hold a ~ +1.7v to ground differential no matter what.

All 5 SMT resistors are good, along with all 8 channels on the 2 x 4 channel resistors and both caps. The regulator is putting out ~3.3v which does appear at the 3.3v pin, and the input pin and the CAP1188 IC. All the LEDs passed a simple diode check. There is no apparent damage to the board, and there is continuity through all the traces that I bothered to check, especially around where the through-hole components were soldered.

Please post a photo of your setup showing how everything is connected.

3 or 5 volts appears at the VIN/GND pins, and the regulated output from 3V6 to GND shows that the onboard regulator seems to be working, but all the LED pins to GND show ~1.7v, and nothing lights up or changes regardless of touching the wire connected to the C1 input

There are only wires for power. Nothing for I2C or SPI. See wiring in guide here:

For testing, try running the example from the library:

I'm well aware, and have tried it with both SPI and I2C. Neither work.

That said, even the basic pilot lights and outputs on the board aren't working.

Per the documentation:

Sensor output pins
The L1 thru L8 pins are the LED driver/sensor output pins. The indicators are really useful for debugging your touch sensor system, but you can also use the indicator output pins for triggering some other electronics. Each L pin corresponds to the matching C sensor input. These pins are 3V normally, and drop to 0V when triggered.

However the pins are always ~1.7v referenced to ground. The LED's never light. This is specifically shown working in the product's main picture.

I'm happy to place 2 more wires plus pull up resistors for I2C and take another picture if that will expedite a replacement/refund for the board.

Please wire it up for I2C and run an address scan:
https://learn.adafruit.com/scanning-i2c ... es/arduino
and post the results here.

Also, please take another photo more at an angle to better show the soldering on the headers pins on the CAP1188 breakout:
