have an early PN532, the one on the manuals title page. However, the manual doesn't seem to reference it. I remember something about having a resistor between sel0 and sel1 to select SPI, but cannot be sure.
If anyone knows, that would be very helpful.

It sounds like you have the shield version rather than the breakout version?
From what I read & see, on the shield you would short the SEL0 and SEL1 jumper pairs to select SPI mode. See the photo https://cdn-learn.adafruit.com/assets/a ... 1396815638 which shows instruction as part of the silk screen.
All I see about adding resistors is on the breakout in I2C mode, since the breakout apparently doesn't have SDA/SLC pullups.
