Cyberdeck hat and bonnet

Post by Mcostas »

When I ordered my pi 400 those two items came up as suggested accessories and were inexpensive so I included them in my order.
Cyberdeck hat 4863
Cyberdeck bonnet 4862

I am new to the pi and I think I misunderstood what these items do. I figured one of them attached to the pins so you could more easily attach the other at an appropriate angle for the pi 400, as the pins are on the back.

Apparently there are more expensive hats that actually do things like sense and/or display but the ones I purchased don't seem to be one of them and I can't find documentation for those specific accessories.

I know this is probably the stupidest question you've read but I'm hoping you can point me in the right direction.

I'm familiar with breadboards, and I'm familiar with programming in basic and fortran (I'm old), but I'm not familiar with the pi. I've started learning python which has been fun but I'm still at the beginning stage right now.

I've been doing a lot of reading and watching videos but haven't seen anything about how to use these specific items. I see there are others but I don't want to make unnecessary purchases, plus, I've already purchased these and I want to use them, I'm ready to make something.

Can you help or point me in the right direction to learn how to use these items.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hats and bonnets are (apart from being silly names) addons for Raspberry Pi boards (and any that share the same 40-pin expansion header pinout). Hats are roughly the same size as a Pi3/4 and bonnets are about half that size (and work well with the Pi-zero).

The Pi 400 is an odd one because it has the standard Pi expansion header, it's on the back. Plugging a hat/bonnet directly has it hang down below the 400. The Cyberdecks serve to elevate and reorient a hat/bonnet so that it's accessible and usable on the 400. That's all they do. Well, almost. They also provide a pair of 3 pin JST connectors for easy access to a couple GPIO pins.

There are many hats and bonnets available for various purposes, available from many companies. Adafruit sells some of them: https://www.adafruit.com/category/286. What one(s) you get depends entirely on what you want to do with your Pi. Pimoroni is one of the popular Pi accessory makers https://shop.pimoroni.com/collections/raspberry-pi.

Adafruit has many Pi related tutorials and projects https://learn.adafruit.com/search?q=raspberry%2520pi.

I hope this helps some.
