Feather M4 CAN Express: Can I tap into the 5v to power a MAX7219 display board?

Post by GuyBooth »

I am wondering whether the 5v supply to the CAN bus is capable of providing the power to a MAX7219 display board.
If not, is there any other way? I don't actually need CAN bus, so just a regular Feather M4 would work if I have to use external boosters.

What are you powering it with and which pin are you considering tapping into?

OP: are you asking if you can just connect + and - to the HIGH and LOW CAN ports on the end of the board?

or do you mean that you want to tap into the up-regulated 5v CAN chip leg?

that led board (8 digit) probably draws maybe max 100mA at full brightness with all segments on (is yours the 8 digit board or the 4 digit board?)...so plan accordingly

probably better to just power via the Batt + pin on the feather.....

When I am running off the LiPo I want to tap into 5v ...
With the Itsy Bitsy I am able to do this using the Vhi Pin, but I have to add the LiPo charger backpack. I want to take advantage of the built-in LiPo charger on the Feather M4 CAN Express, but if I then have to add a boost converter I have lost the advantage.
