Motor and shield incompatibility

Post by Brayden3reed »

Hi! I'm trying to run 4 stepper motors on 2 shields and an arduino uno r3. When I plug it in i hear a singular tick noise in my first motor and then the LED on the shield starts to blink. I believe my motor needs more current than the 0.6A that is max.

Here are my stepper motor specs:
Motor Type Bipolar Stepper
Step Angle 1.8 deg
Holding Torque 16Ncm(22.6oz.in)
Rated Current/phase 1.0A
Phase Resistance 3.7ohms
Inductance 4.5mH ± 20%(1KHz)
Driving Voltage 12-24VDC

I plan on using a 12v power supply so that checks out but the current says 1.0 A so im just curious if this is my problem and if so should i find new motors or add a heat sink? I am new to this and would like the easiest path for a beginner regardless of cost. Thanks for helping me out!!!!

Phase Resistance 3.7ohms
At 12v, that motor will be trying to pull 3.35A per phase (6.7A total). Those motors are not compatible with the shield.

The shields do not have current limiting, so you either need to find motors with a higher phase resistance (10 ohms or more) or switch to a 'chopper' type stepper driver with current limiting: https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-st ... he-stepper

Thank you for the help Bill! Just making sure but will these motor specs work? They have the phase resistance over 10 ohms and the current is less than the 0.6 A.

Motor Type Bipolar Stepper
Step Angle 1.8 deg
Holding Torque 26Ncm(36.8oz.in)
Rated Current/phase 0.4A
Phase Resistance 30ohms
Inductance 37mH ± 20%(1KHz)
Driving Voltage 12-24VDC

Yes, that motor should work with the sheild.

Thank you so much for your help with this Bill! It means a lot since I'm new to this and it relieves a lot of stress trying to figure things out on my own! God bless you!
