Pigrrl 2

Post by dionysus_42 »

Just finished wiring up my Pigrrl 2! In the sound settings, which audio device is the speaker soldered onto the raspberry pi? Also, how can I display both on the Pitft and an hdmi monitor at the same time? And how do I set the Pitft side buttons to functions such as volume up or down or mute?

The amp + speaker is soldered through the 1/8" or 3.5mm analog audio out pins on the Pi.

The HDMI will not be accessible. TFT only with this project.

Good question about the four TFT display buttons. You should be able to set those up in this part of the guide:

Hold down each TFT button to assign a value from the "Configure Input" menu of emulation station.

Yes, the setting for audio output from when configuring in Retro Pi is analog output.

I also might’ve messed up the speaker. Do these nodes need to be connected ?

You have soldered to the correct pads. I tested my PiGRRL2 which is wired up to the amp and it all rings through as connected.

The Audio section has some suggestions. I taped my speaker and it resolved the issue for me.
Are you hearing a strange sound when powering up the Pi? The battery might be in a bad spot where it's causing interference noise with the audio jack. If you remove the mounting screws from the Pi on the back of the bottom case, you can separate the two parts while it's still powered.

Once they're separated, reposition the battery and listen carefully to the noise. Position the battery in a spot where the noise is less prominent and mount it in place with tape or mounting tack.

Another option you can try is to adjust the pot on the sound amp. Lowering the gain may fix the sound interference when repositioning the battery doesn't work.

The best location for the battery I've found is directly tucked inbetween the Raspberry Pi and the PiTFT display.

There is a tip in the troubleshooting section of the guide for better audio quality and even adding a mute function on one of the TFT buttons.

If you would like to post some photos of your soldering around audio related connections I can confirm if anything stands out.

You are not using HDMI so that will need to be set back to the analog headphone setting.

There audio going to zero appears to be a common issue. Let me know if these three tips help:
Most RetroPie users with audio issues often complain about their system volume getting stuck at 0, and it retracts back to the point even when you increase the volume. When this happens, you cannot increase the sound level in the emulator. Hence, you won’t hear clicks, and your games will play without sound. There are three main ways to fix this. Let’s discuss each method in detail.
