For RTC breakouts, etc., use the Other Products from Adafruit forum

DS3231 RTC rechargeable battery question

Post by _phillip »

I have ordered several of Adafruit's DS3231 RTC's,

but am going to use this module in an enclosure that (1) is not easily accessible and (2) when the coin cell battery needs replacing it will most likely be done by a non-technical person who could easily destroy the RTC and do futher damage in the process.

Because of this I would really like to be able to replace the coin cell with a rechargeable 3.7V LiPo battery.

Does anyone even know if this is feasible?

Thank you.

From what I've read about this, it seems that it shouldn't be a problem. Another alternative is to use a coin cell breakout so the battery can be changed without having to mess with the feather/wing: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1868.

@dastels

I have NEVER heard of a coin cell breakout!!! This will solve my problem in spades.

Do you think that the RTC I purchased is the best match for this? I will order several of the coin cell breakouts as soon as I hear back from you.

Thank you so much for your post.

@dastels

I hope it comes with wiring schematic/instructions. I did not see any on the product page.

It is just + and -. There are the two tabs of the battery holder on the FeatherWing. - will go to the tab at the end of the board, + to the one near the RTC chip.
