I received another Hallowing Express M4 on an order today. It looked like it booted up okay then the screen went black. I plugged it up with the adafruit Stemma cable to my other Hallowing and that one is working fine. Unplug everything and just put USB power to the new hallowing and nothing.
If I put it into boot loader mode the leds light up but the screen still stays black.
I updated the boot loader and put back on the default eye UF2.
Even the troubleshooter UF2 doesn’t show anything on the screen.
Is this just a bad screen?

Re: HalloWing M4 Express Screen Black Defective?
It sounds like the screen worked initially. How long before it went blank? Any correlation with anything when that occurred?

Re: HalloWing M4 Express Screen Black Defective?
I cannot figure out what it would have been. The steps followed were from this:
https://learn.adafruit.com/synchronized ... s/wiring-2
The jumper wire was placed in the slots marked for GND and A2. Only did this on the new board. That is when the screen went black afterwards. The lights on the back still blink and show power and activity. It still sees USB connection on the computer too.
Would anything have shorted with this? These screens are soldered direct unlike the Cricket Express boards which have an adapter.

The screen only was on for about 30 seconds before going black.

Yes. The eyes were not in sequence either. Then the one just went black. I thought maybe it was the cable or low battery. I tried a single USB power bank into my first hallowing. Still the same so it wasn’t battery charge.

And I also made sure to only use a single battery to one Hallowing just like the instructions and not to both.

Reading this again - it looks like you connected two Hallowing's together via their STEMMA QT ports?I plugged it up with the adafruit Stemma cable to my other Hallowing and that one is working fine.

Re: HalloWing M4 Express Screen Black Defective?
Was that shown in a guide somewhere? Doing that will tie the output of the two board's voltage regulators together.
EDIT - Think I found it. Were you doing this?

Yes that is what I was following. I only hooked one hallowing to a battery as noted in that.

Re: HalloWing M4 Express Screen Black Defective?
That sounds OK.
Just to check what was done here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-hal ... cs-3042541
And it was the M4 version? (not the M0 version)

Re: HalloWing M4 Express Screen Black Defective?
Correct. M4 version. It didn’t show anything in the screen.
Then I also updated the board and when it turns on the back lights are lit now but nothing from the screen at all.

Re: HalloWing M4 Express Screen Black Defective?
There's a chance this may have been a software/hardware thing. The accelerometer on the Hallowing M4 was recently updated from a MSA301 to a MSA311. Some software has not caught up with this change and could potentially cause the behavior seen.
