ItsyBitsy 32u4 5V "Programmer not responding"

Post by needlessdynamite »

I've read through a bunch of threads, tried several different cables - I even bought a new cable this week - and went back to Ardruino IDE 1.8.19. But no matter what I try, I can't get a sketch to upload to the board. I'm hitting a wall and hoping someone and help guide me. Here's an overview of my environment:

- MacOS Monterey 12.0.1
- IDE: 1.8.19 (though I get same result in 2.0.3)
- Sketch: Strandtest (from adafruit)
- Board: ItsyBitsy32u4 5V
- Port: /dev/cu.UART1
-Programmer: Arduino as ISP (Atmega32u4)
- Errors:

Code: Select all

Connecting to programmer: .avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding

avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
Found programmer: Id = ""; type =
    Software Version = .; Hardware Version = .@
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: error: buffered memory access not supported. Maybe it isn't
a butterfly/AVR109 but a AVR910 device?
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
         this check.

avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: error: programmer did not respond to command: leave prog mode
avrdude: butterfly_recv(): programmer is not responding
avrdude: error: programmer did not respond to command: exit bootloader

avrdude done. Thank you.
I wanted to call out a few observations. When I plug into the board, the onboard LED does NOT light up. If I touch the atmega chip, it is scorching hot. Single pressing, double pressing the reset button has inconsistent affect - sometimes the LED starts pulsing and sometimes it doesn't. Could the board be overheating? Do I still not have the right cable?

Thanks.

Okay, so I think it's definitely a port issue. I think I must be using the wrong port or my Mac isn't recognizing the Itsy Bitsy port. Any ideas what would prevent / cause a failure to see the Itsy Bitsy port?

When I plug into the board, the onboard LED does NOT light up.
This is expected. The LED must be driven by software.
If I touch the atmega chip, it is scorching hot.
This is not expected.

Is anything attached to the Itsy other than the USB cable?

Thanks for the reply! I’m really stuck.

Yes, and the board is in a breadboard. I’ve soldered headers onto most pins. I have jumpers running from 5V pin to my power rail, G pin to common ground rail, and pin 7 is connected to a Neopixel Jewel. But that’s it.

It sounds like something is shorted. Please remove from breadboard, disconnect anything attached to any pins, and post photos of both sides of the Itsy. We'll look for any obvious hardware issue.

I was wondering if there was a hardware or circuit issue. But I don't understand how or why that would affect the Port. Here are some photos, what do you think?

Thanks for the photo. Soldering is a bit thin on a few pins. But nothing appears to be shorted.
I have jumpers running from 5V pin to my power rail, G pin to common ground rail, and pin 7 is connected to a Neopixel Jewel.
Can you provide more information on these connections. How were they made? Was the Itsy placed on a breadboard?

Could you post a photo showing exactly how this board was plugged into your breadboard? (without reconnecting it to a power source) Was it a solderless protoboard? In particular, was the column of pins 3V, En, G plugged into the breadboard sockets?

I think this was the problem. The way I had the Itsy Bitsy plugged into the breadboard, the 3V, En and G pins all shared the same row of breadboard sockets. I removed those pins completely and now I'm able to see a new Port and upload sketches to the board! I feel silly for not considering that before but I'm just getting back into Arduino world after a few years away. Thank you Carter and Argonblue for the help!

Cool, glad it recovered. That was my general concern also.

I'd label that board somehow, like with a sharpie mark, just so you know that happened to it. Even though it seems to be working now, I'd always be a little suspicious of it. As long as it behaves as expected, no worries. But just in case it might start acting weird in the future.
