MagTag display not working after using Power Profiler Kit II

Post by TomiM »

Hi, I have had my MagTag now for two months and today I tried my Nordic Semiconductor Power Profiler Kit II with MagTag and I plugged it to the 3.7/4.2V Lipoly battery connector. I programmed the Power Profiler Kit for 3.7V and turned it on. After using it, not seeing any issues and MagTag was working fine (Circuit Python is detecting the device, gets internet connection and I get serial messages as normal) the eInk display stopped working after I turned the power. I noticed some electrical smell around the board. No visible damage though. Seems like some component is broken but I don't know which one.

Is there some sort of solution for this issue? What should I do next?

It sounds like something got shorted.

If you're still able to get into UF2 bootloader mode by double pressing reset and getting the MAGTAGBOOT folder to show up, try the demo UF2 from here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-mag ... pping-demo
Just download the UF2 file and drag to MAGTAGBOOT folder.

Please post a photo showing how the Power Profiler Kit was attached to the MagTag.

I had a brown Vout wire connected from the Power Profiler Kit to the MagTag's red wire. Other was grounding.

Today I decided to try to fix my MagTag and I tried to install CircuitPython Internet Test (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-mag ... et-connect). After installing it the display actually started updating again. Although, it displays the end of the serial monitor as expected, for some reason it updates MagTag text in the background. Perhaps the display is working fine or sort of. But why I get this MagTag text? Is there a way to factory reset the device?

If CircuitPython is running OK, then it should ideally take care of initializing the display. The factory demo is here:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-mag ... mo-3077979
but that will just show the MagTag logo again.

Try running a CircuitPython program that updates the whole display and see what happens.

Maybe one of the example from the MagTag library?

Got everything working! I don't know what happened as a whole. Maybe next time when I use POWER PROFILER KIT II I should use for example a 10uF capacitor as a filter?
