CubicSDR on M1 Mac does not start

Post by SchraderMA »

Hi,
This is about order 2995072-7938065220 for part 1497 Software Defined Radio Receiver, which I placed on January 10, 2023 and received on January 14.

I want to use this device on my M1 MacBook Air which runs MacOS Ventura 13.1.
I am using the application CubicSDR v0.2.3.
The SDR device has worked once - it started and played music from an FM radio station for about 10 seconds. Since then it is detected by the CubicSDR software when I plug it into a USB port, but no 'waterfall display' ever appears

There is another posting in the ADAFruit forums about problems connecting this SDR to M1 Macs:
viewtopic.php?t=193914&start=15
My situation is very similar except that I had my 10 seconds of success.

I have also seen postings about heat problems with the SDR. Is it possible that I had a defective unit which cooked itself when connected?

The ten-second success seems to show that the software stack is OK, but I am suspicious about one aspect of the M1 Mac USB setup: the Macbook Air only has USB-C connections. I connect the SDR with a USB-classic to USB-C adapter. The USB setup in System information looks like this when the SDR is connected:
USB 3.1 Bus:
Host Controller Driver: AppleT8103USBXHCI
RTL2838UHIDIR:
Product ID: 0x2838
Vendor ID: 0x0bda (Realtek Semiconductor Corp.)
Version: 1.00
Serial Number: 00000001
Speed: Up to 480 Mb/s
Manufacturer: Realtek
Location ID: 0x00100000 / 1
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 500
Extra Operating Current (mA): 0

This adapter is working fine with other USB devices.

What should I do?

We can do a refund if your only machine option is a M1 based Mac. If you have another machine to try it on Windows, Linux, Pi, older Mac, etc. that would be a valuable data point.

I got a friend to install CubicSDR v0.2.4 on his Windows laptop. We were able to get my AdaFruit 1497 SDR to receive several FM radio stations on his setup. I had no success using the same device on my M1 MacBook Air.
If you have no other ideas on how to get the 1497 work, I would like a refund.
Do you carry other SDR products which are more likely to work on my Mac?

Hi,
My only computer option is the M1 MacBook Air. Can I get a refund?

Yes, please email [email protected] for a refund. They will need a link to this forum thread as authorization and your order#.
