Feather and NMEA 0183/RS-422?

Post by inforoo »

This is the first of what probably will end up being a handful of questions on this project, what should be a pretty simple attempt to get NMEA 0183 sentences from the ultimate gps featherwing to my boat’s vhf radio using two wire RS-422 serial. Right now I’m just putting my BOM together and gathering parts.

I have two extra Bluefruit 32u4s and an RP 2040 feather lying around. Neither support RS-422 natively, right? If so, does adafruit make a converter board of sorts? Otherwise, is there another small converter you all would recommend?

I’m thinking I’m gonna use one of the Bluefruits for this project even though it doesn’t require Bluetooth or wifi. Is there any reason I should use the RP 2040 instead?

Thanks all!

Ok, looking at the ultimate gps featherwing, which I also have on hand, it seems it natively supports NMEA 0183 serial output at 9600 baud.

This is great because it would obviate the need for an RS-422 converter except my vhf needs 3800 baud. What should I use to accomplish this?
