SMT RT Angle Connector for ID #2860

Post by teddybearsanta »

Looking for a right angle SMT connector to exit the rear of the stick and not parallel due to space constraints.

Adafruit's inventory does not seem to have a SMT connector for ID #2860. I need to daisy chain (cable) a number of sticks and prefer not to hard wire the sticks. It appears that the SMT connectors in Adafruit's inventory have a 1mm pitch and the sticks have a 2.54mm pitch (.1" pitch).

Looking for connector source(s) or alternate solutions to solve design issue.

That's correct, mostly because no such connector exists. The arrangement of the holes for the NeoPixel Jewel is our own design, and the spacing between holes is far too wide for SMT connector families.

There's a middle solution:

Glue two JST-PH3 sockets to the back of a NeoPixel Jewel:

Then solder in wire to connect the pins of one connector to 5V-DIN-GND, and the pins of the other connector to 5V-DOUT-GND. Then you can make cables to connect the NeoPixel Jewels by crimping female terminals onto three pieces of long wire and socketing the terminals into JST-PH3 plugs.

All you have to do is make sure that the wires that connect to 5V-DOUT-GND on one NeoPixel Jewel will connect to 5V-DIN-GND on the next one.

JST-PH connectors are keyed, so there's only one way to insert them into a socket. Once you've taken the time to build the cables properly, you can plug and unplug them without having to worry about getting the connections wrong.

Honestly, the terminal kit linked above won't have many of the connectors you need, and will have a lot of connectors you don't need. You can get sockets, plugs, and terminals from Digikey without having to spend too much, and getting just PH3 connectors will be a better use of your money.

Thank you for your advice. I appreciate your research.

Would your answer be the same for a RGBW stick #2867?

You can also use wired JST jacks with the RGBW Sticks, or you can solder the jacks directly to the pads.

JST-PH connectors have the pins on 2mm centers while 0.1" is 2.54mm, but you can make things line up for two to four pins.

There are also SMT jacks that will solder directly to the PCB. We don't carry them, but you can get them at Digikey:
