Itsy Bitsy 16Mhz 5V DOA?

Post by ChuckOCo »

Hi,

I love the Itsy Bitsy and have a few I've bought in the past. They work like champs.
However, I bought a new one (Order #3033372-3068278084), plugged it in and ...nothing.

The computer makes a 'USB item plugged in sound', but the IDE shows only COM1. I don't use COM1.
When I plug in one of the original Itsys, use the same cable, same USB port, COM7 appears and is available. COM1 is still there, but it is useless and irrelevant.

Plug the new board in again, hear the sound, but COM7 goes away and I'm unable to upload.

Old Itsys works.
New Itsy doesn't.

DOA?

Please advise.

Thanks,
Chuck

Oops, sorry, missed your reply.

It's interesting that it's at least making a COM port entry - the COM1 that shows up.

What does COM1 show up as in Device Manager? Might help figuring this out to know what the operating system *things* is being plugged in.

COM1 isn't a USB COM port. It is a chip on the MB, which doesn't even have a connector to it. I have never been able to use the COM1 port, but always had the USB COM ports come up when an Itsy is attached. Something isn't right with this ItsyBtsy - 3 others work. This new one doesn't.

OK, it sounded like the COM1 was showing up in conjunction with the "plugged in" sound.

Does anything new show up in Device Manager when it's plugged in? Or any error message like "unknown device"?

When a working Itsy is plugged in, the following shows up in the device manager:
Other devices:
unknown device (not itsy. It is present even when no board is plugged in)
Ports (COM & LPT)
communications port 1 (COM1)
USB Serial Device (COM7)

When the failing Itsy is plugged in, the following shows in the device manager:
Other devices:
ATm32U4DFU
unknown device (not itsy. It is present even when no board is plugged in)
Ports (COM & LPT)
communications port 1 (COM1)

Ugh, OK, thanks for checking. That's the issue. It's showing up, just not as expected. :(

Yep, let's just replace it. Thanks again for working through the troubleshooting.

Send an email to [email protected] with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement Itsy.

Having similar issue, but without prior device history...
will continue studying forums before escalating effort.
wanted to mention about com ports on PC class machines...
There are really only 2 ports, com1 and com2. All others are basically emulations
of these, with com3 emulating com1 and com4 emulating com2, and so on.
its odds and evens.
com7 would correlate with com1, as described.
flow control, baud, and fifo settings have wrangled devices into shape when nothing else worked.
peace...
