3V or 5V Ultimate GPS Logger Shield?

Post by jvoe »

Is the Ultimate GPS Logger Shield (ID:1272) compatible with 3.3V boards? My 3.3V board cannot handle 5V on its pins.

I see that the tutorial mentions that the 'RX pin is 5V friendly', so I think it suggest that it communicates with 3.3V? Is the same true for the SD-card unit?

Alternatively, can I connect the 5V pin of the shield to 3.3V, and will the shield still function normally?

The product description says "Assembled & tested shield for Arduino Uno/Duemilanove/Diecimila/Leonardo (not for use with Mega/ADK/Due)"
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1272
So, looks like it is not tested with 3.3V board.

Yeah, the Shield will work with 3.3V systems.

Both the GPS module and the SD card are 3.3V devices. The GPS module can accept 5V input, and a 5V microcontroller can read its 3.3V output. The Shield also has an HC4050 buffer that can accept 5V signals while connected to 3.3V power. It converts 5V SPI to 3.3V SPI that will work for an SD card.

Connecting the Shield to a 3.3V system just makes things easier.
