Double tapping reset doesn't bring up bootloader

Post by eciramella »

Hi all -

Super new to all of this, I bought a Adafruit ESP32 Feather V2 w.FL Antenna - 8MB Flash + 2 MB PSRAM - STEMMA QT and have it connected to my Mac (Ventura 13.3.1).

I'm double tapping reset to try out the WipperSnapper - but for the life of me, this thing doesn't show up anywhere.

Is there a secret to this? I've tried all manner of double tapping with no luck.

Are you using a data-capable cable? Some are charge/power only.

Would I not be able to send sketches to it if that were the case?

You didn't say anything about being able to program it. Yes, programming it would indicate a data cable.

You've worked through the instructions on https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-esp ... pper-setup?

Sure - I'm stuck on the "load the firmware" part where you need to get it into bootloader mode.

I found the webserial tool https://adafruit.github.io/Adafruit_WebSerial_ESPTool/ restoring from that. Will try a few other things.

Ok - I've tried everything that I can find.

How does one reset to factory? I have tried double clicking the reset button, holding down the boot, then clicking reset, then letting go of boot. I have used the web ESPTool and erased and followed these steps:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-esp ... tory-reset

For the life of me, I can NOT get this to show up as a drive such that I can restore to factory settings.

Is there anything in my OS I should be looking for?

As I suspected, the V2 doesn't have native USB and so doesn't present a flashdrive when connected. Be sure you've read the tutorial: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-esp ... tory-reset.

yes you cannot 'double tap' the ESP32 classic chips - the bootloader is entered automatically over serial. and there's no disk drive that will ever appear

where are you seeing instructions to double tap / look for a disk drive?

Hi,

Please follow the instructions on https://io.adafruit.com/devices/new/fea ... web/step-2 to set up your Adafruit Feather ESP32 v2 with WipperSnapper. This installation wizard will get you fully set up with WipperSnapper.

You should not need to double-tap a button. Where are you seeing that? Could you provide a link or screenshot?

Blarg - thank you all - these last three replies have been ultra helpful.

This is PEBKAC - I was following the ESP32-S2 instructions, but not the ESP32-V2 instructions :-(

I ended up going down the audrino sketch route to ship metrics up to AdafruitIO (which is working FANTASTIC).

I appreciate everything folks - and hope my mistake helps someone else out who may stumble across this.

Retracing my steps, this link:

https://www.adafruit.com/product/5438

Doesn't have a direct link to the learning page similar feathers have (like a direct link to https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-esp32-feather-v2 would be lovely).

So, from that page, I clicked:

https://www.adafruit.com/product/5400
then
https://www.adafruit.com/product/3405
then
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-huz ... 32-feather
