help with power for servos with different voltages

Post by UncleDenz »

Two questions:

I need a recommendation for a RELIABLE power source. I bought a cheap power adapter off Amazon (SoulBay brand), and after a week it sparked at the outlet when plugging in and stopped working. I bought a duplicate and it did the same thing.

I have been working off batteries since, but they drain SO fast.

Second:

I have a robotics project with 56 servos... SG90's (4.8 - 6V); 17 in the head and 6 for each hand... 13 25kg (4.8 - 6.8V) for the medium joints, and 14 60kg (6 - 8.4V) for the larger joints.

I am using a Raspberry Pi 4b, and chained 4 PCA9685.

All motors work with a 4AA battery pack. Although the larger motors barely work and really need more voltage to work best.

All 60kg's are on one PCA9685.

I have not been able to figure out how to run the larger motors on a higher voltage, while on the same chain.

I have considered running a secondary Pi with the larger motors on an isolated board, taking commands from the primary Pi?

I am a total amateur... I've been working on this project almost a year... have since learned 3d modeling, 3d printing, soldering, Python... but the power electronics stuff still eludes me!

Bless you for any advice!

Thats an impressive project!

To run the 60kg servos at different voltages you can just supply a different voltage to the PCA9695 that they are connected to. When chaining the PCA9685, omit the V+ connection to that board. That will isolate the higher servo supply voltage from the other PCA9685 boards.

This is an awesome project!
I'm Les Pounder, Associate Editor at Tom's Hardware and we would love to cover your project on our site. Do you have any more details and images that we can use?
Also, would you be interested in talking about the project on our show, The Pi Cast?
Thanks
