Pi Zero bass ackwards into Pi Cobbler+

I accidentally put a Zero into a Pi Cobbler+ the wrong way and wasn't paying attention until I I sensed that wonderful burning smell. A DHT22 and 16x2 blue LCD were connected. I'm unable to read from the sensor anymore and the backlight is rather dim and some of the character locations appear to be jacked up. I tried the LCD on another breadboard with another Zero and it behaves the same way there. I'm thinking I probably fried both components. :-( Whoops! At least the Pi appears to be fine.

When the Pi was connected properly, the DHT22 was on pin 17. The LCD was connected as follows:
RS - 13
EN - 19
DB7 - 26
DB6 - 21
DB5 - 20
DB4 - 16

Is there anything I can try?

Was it just the LCD, or did you have one of the breakouts with an MCP23017 controlling the display through an I2C connection?

If you had an MCP23017, that might have taken the worst damage. If not, I'm afraid the HD44780 display driver is probably toast.

It was just the LCD. Kind of what I figured though. Live and learn. :-)
