Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)

Post by rob175 »

Just bought a new USBtinyISP kit from digikey. Put it together and it's saying:

Code: Select all

rjw@localhost:~$ avrdude -c usbtiny -p m8
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)

avrdude done. Thank you.
journalctl (ubuntu 16.04) shows:

Code: Select all

Mar 28 08:49:10 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 30 using xhci_hcd
Mar 28 08:49:10 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: device descriptor read/64, error -71

Mar 28 08:49:12 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: new full-speed USB device number 33 using xhci_hcd
Mar 28 08:49:12 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: Device not responding to setup address.
Mar 28 08:49:13 localhost kernel: usb 3-2: Device not responding to setup address.

Mar 28 08:49:13 localhost kernel: usb usb3-port2: unable to enumerate USB device
No green light. I do get 5V across pins 10 and 20 on the AVR2313.

I'll attach photos. Any other ways to troubleshoot this?

Thanks
Rob

Can you please post another higher res photo of the soldering on the under side. And slightly more at an angle. Some of the pins are a little hard to visually check.

Sure. How's this one? The only concerning spot I see is along the 6 pin header, but that's an artifact of the photo. There's no bridge there.

Thanks. That looks OK.

Have you tried another USB cable?

Is that dmesg (journalctl) output repeatable?

Good idea. The USB cable I'm using is working fine w/ an Arduino. However, I did just try a second cable and multiple USB ports on my Linux host. The dmesg is repeatable.

Thanks for the photo. The soldering looks generally OK.

What kind of USB port is being used on the host machine? Is there another USB port you could try and see if you get the same behavior?

I've tried USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports on the machine with similar results. Ports work fine with an Arduino.

Yep. I'm not sure either, so passed this one on to see if others might have some ideas. Please wait a bit since people are spread out right now. But ping us again if you haven't heard anything after more time.

There's more to the saga of (could not find USBtiny device) under Windows 10. Seems the power plan sets a 'state' for the driver in which removing the device makes the driver 'disappear' and then plugging the USBtiny back into a USB port fails to identify and reload the driver thus AVRDUDE will not find the device. this also happens if you shutdown Windows 10. Upon next reboot, the device listing under Device Manager will be gone as will the drivers.

I will post images and a working flow of how to disable the USB 'feature' under the Power Plan for windows 10 when I get home as I know how frustrating this 'vanishing' issue can be.

the following works for me under Windows 10 with a ryzen processor:
go to SETTINGS
select 'System'
select 'power and sleep'
go to top right corner and select 'Additional Power Settings'
a list of 'power plans' comes up
on the plan you are currently using click on 'Change Plan Settings'
click on 'Advanced Power Settings'
a small window opens with lists of selections
open the 'USB settings'
select 'USB selective suspend setting'
disable it

by doing this I am now able to plug and unplug (into the same USB port, a 3.0 port) without the dirvers 'vanishing' and can shutdown or restart my machine
and retain the USB drivers under the 'Device Manager'

you may need to install drivers with the Adafruit driver install utility and if that fails then use Zadig driver installer
