Adafruit MCP9600 I2C Thermocouple Amplifier with grounded se

Post by tonisvain »

Can grounded thermocouple probes be used with this board?

Issue is that i have sensors that are grounded at the hot junction for thermal response reason.
if not, do you have suggestions on how to make the board "floating" whilst being powered and passing the I2C signals.

Do you have other suggestions?

Thanks!

Any updates on this question? I am looking for a thermocouple amplifier that can be used with grounded thermocouples

I'll check with the engineers.

we have a few thermocouple amps - max31855, max31856, etc but i think all have ground fault responses. probably because most hot things have the cases grounded and touching the case would be an error. use kapton tape to electrically isolate while keeping thermally connected?

I am looking to use Thermocouple as EGT (Pyrometer) and install it in the exhaust manifold. Temperatures will be ~550-700 C.

How thermocouples should be installed:

It will be touching the manifold with the threaded part of the thermocouple, and the sheath is connected with the threaded part, so it will be grounded.

As I understand this would mean that unless you install a grounded thermocouple through non-conductive material - it will be grounded and none of the amplifiers will work?

I know that there are ungrounded sealed thermocouples, but they are rare and have delayed response times.

Would be really helpful if you know any amplifiers that can work with grounded thermocouples

Can you post the datasheet for the thermocouples? Neat build, by the way.

It is not my build, but I plan to build something similar for my truck.
What specs do you need for this thermocouple? I will try to get them for you.

Thermocouple I am planning to use has some specs right in the product description:
