Gemma V2 - Another Connectivity issue

Post by marcustkw »

Hi,

I just purchased a Gemma. And it won't go into bootloader mode. Pressing the reset button didnt help.
There is no red light. And the usb device did not show up on the host computer.

I tried the Gemma on windows, mac os, ubuntu laptop.
Also tried using multiple cables.
And USB 3.0 and 2.0 port...

I brought multiple items. The circuit playground express works. But the Gemma didnt.
I still have a bunch of other stuff to test...I guess I should do that soon

Any suggestion or I should process for a replacement or refund?

Is the power switch in the "on" position?
Is the green power LED lit?

Yes, only green light. The red led never turn on.
The cable I used worked with the Circuit Playground Express.
And I tried 3-4 cables.

I also tried a usb 2.0 port instead of usb 3.0 port on a ubuntu workstation. The laptops (windows / mac os) I have are with usb 3.0 only

I saw a forum post that suggest uploading a new bootloader; but I dont have an Arduino Uno to try that out.

It's getting power then.

It's likely the bitbanged USB, as mentioned at the top of the description on the product page:
Deprecation Warning: The Gemma bit-bang USB technique it uses doesn't work as well as it did in 2014, many modern computers won't work well. So while we still carry the Gemma so that people can maintain some older projects, we no longer recommend it. Please check out the Gemma M0. It has built-in USB, more capabilities, and is comparable in price!

I didn't realize that there is a Gemma M0...
I brought the "Adafruit Gemma Sequin Starter Pack"
And it came with the Gemma V2... ...

Possible to get an exchange or return?

By the way, what is the environment specification where the Gemma V2 will work?
Thanks.

I would like to suggest making a sweep through the product pages for any bundles that include a non-M0 Gemma board and duplicate the USB deprecation warning. (It might be a good idea for Trinket and other boards that have similar USB connectivity problems, too.)
