Question about servos for Fairy wings

Post by fairywings82 »

Hi everyone,

I am making the adafruit fairy wings seen here: https://learn.adafruit.com/animatronic-cosplay-wings

I am using the same servos listed in the supply list but I'm worried that the wings I am making might be too heavy. So my question is, how much weight can these servos handle and is it possible to figure out how long the battery would last? Should I get an extra battery in case it dies and swap it out while my daughter is wearing them?

I am using heavy water color paper for the wings with floral tape wrapped 16 gauge wire for support. Then I have a layer of iron on vinyl and cellophane film on the wings. (I watched this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H4wJ42akriA) I wanted to paint the wings with alcohol ink but the artist who did the tutorial uses an extra layer of vinyl to seal the ink.

Should I be worried about the weight of the wings? Will the servos be able to move the wings? Will a heavier wing kill the battery faster? Thank you in advance for the help, I really appreciate it :)

In that design, the 3D printed bracket and ball-bearing holds the weight of the wings. The servo just moves them back and forth. Those are pretty strong servos, so they can manage to move a bit more mass. But heavier wings will make it move slower and drain the battery a bit faster.
