Adafruit FX Sound board 16mb plays OGG but not WAV

Post by jonogunn »

Hey there. I'm not sure what else I can post here to help solve my issue but basically my adafruit plays OGG files no problem. But when I play the WAV version of those files it doesn't work. Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you for reading!

Double check that the WAV files are in the correct format. See https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-aud ... udio-files.

Hi guys,

I ran into another issue now.

I followed the instructions on Adafruit and how to convert the files to the suitable wav formats. The audio sounds fine when playing back on my pc but when I load it up to my adafruit it is EXTREMELY quiet. I have to max out the amp volume knob just to hear anything at all. I tested it out with other wav files already formatted correctly but it's the same.

When I play OGG files it's completely fine. Nice and loud.

I've tested 2 different amps as well but same results.

How does the WAV file amplitude compare the the OGG files?

When I play it from my PC the wav is only VERY slightly quieter than the OGG.

When playing from the adafruit it is very very quiet barely audible but the OGG is very loud.

But what about the data? The PC player may be normalizing the dynamic range.

By data I mean the sound data... what you'll see when you load the sound file into something like audacity.

It seems it doesn't matter which wav file...

Also to *sigh* make matters more complicated it happened to one of my OGG files but not the other.

Maybe I need to format my sound board?

I'm at a loss. How do the sample files perform?

I tried the sample tracks from adafruit just now.

T00.ogg played a beep sound nice and loud. The rest that are WAV files were VERY quiet.

I tested it with headphones too just to rule anything out and it's the same.

@jonogunn,

Can you describe the WAV file format settings you ended up using? I realize the sample files are also relatively quiet, but this would be a good data point to have. 16-bit, mono, 22Khz, etc.

What is the power supply you are using? This board can easily draw over 1.6W during play back.

Amp and speaker resistance?

Can you post a picture of the board and how it is connected?

WAV Settings: I followed the instructions on Adafruit and used Audacity to resample my files to 16bit, mono, 22khz. I have also tried files from other people's github that is formatted the same as they were designed to be used on their own Adafruit sound board. Then of course I tried the sample files provided by Adafruit.

Power Supply: I am using a 12v battery connected to a DC-DC step down converter to get the output to 5v.

AMP: I have tried 2 different amps
- 100Wx2 Amp
- 30W + 30W Amp

Speaker: 200W Peak/ 50W RMSAII 4-way design (sorry I'm not good with audio stuff)

I have also tried my iPhone headphones.

Here is the set up

Here is a video:
I doubt you can hear the very faint sounds of the WAV files from the video.
