4755 Solar LiPo Charger BQ24074 IC Gets Really Hot

Post by slash128 »

Hi, I got a 4755 Solar LiPo charger module for a solar powered project I am working on. While charging a 3.7V 10,000mAH LiPo battery using USB-C the BQ24074 IC is getting pretty hot, too hot to comfortably touch. Is this normal?

I have the same question but I am charging with a 9V 650mA wall charger. I have 3x of these boards and have tried charing three different 4,400 mAH batteries ordered from Adafruit. All three boards have the same behavior.

The bottom of the boards get really hot. I'm measuring 120F with an infrared thermometer.

Is this normal?

120F is not actually very hot - thats only 50*C and even commercial grade electronics are rated for 85*C (185C) - you can charge at a lower rate if you like, but it will internally thermally limit
Easiest to reduce heat-power is to use a 5V or 6V power plug.
