Motor Shield V2 - GND Question

Post by guibot »

I have a Motor Shield v2 connected to an ESP32.

I was having shutdown issues from the Motor Shield.
My power source is 5V - 4 Amp, so I beleive is good enough to drive four little motors.

I noticed that the GND on the Power Terminal Block is not connected to the rest of the Motor Shield circuit. I connected both GND's and the shutdowns stopped.

I wonder if this is a good practice? Should I be aware of anything else?

Thanks

I don't have a motor shield to check but in most cases tying the ground is the common practice since it is a path for the signal return.

Exactly, I always connect GND's.
My question is, why isn't the GND of the motor drivers, connected to the Logic Circuit on the Shield?
I beleive there must be a reason.

All the grounds are connected on the board. Please refer to the schematic: https://learn.adafruit.com/assets/9536

It might be true in the schematic, but If I perform a test continuity with the multimeter it doesn't show any connection between logic and motor driver GND.
