What's the difference between these two I/O expanders:
Adafruit AW9523 GPIO Expander and LED Driver Breakout - STEMMA QT / Qwiic
vs.
Adafruit MCP23017 I2C GPIO Expander Breakout - STEMMA QT / Qwiic
Why would I prefer one over the other, except for the fact that one is not in stock.

The MCP23017 is our long-time go-to expander chip. However, recent supply-chain issues have made it really hard to source, so we went looking for other options like the AW9523 .
Compared to the MCP23017, the AW9523 does NOT have internal pullup resistor. So it is less convenient for interfacing to buttons & switches. What the AW9523 does have in its favor is internal LED dimming, so it is a better option for controlling LEDs.
