Re: Did I break the battery circuit?
can you power the NEW board without the USB cable attached, and plug the battery in securely - does it power on?

I’m not sure I understand... do you mean power the new board with battery only? If so, yes it does power up... that’s how I got the battery discharged to try charging it again.
And what do you mean by “plug the battery securely”?
Or do you mean something different?

With the battery connector inserted solidly into the battery socket on the Feather so it isn't loose or wiggly.

try removing the battery and powering with USB, then measure the voltage between the VBAT and GND pins - it should be ~4.2V (trying to charge the battery), just trying to figure out if its the battery or the charging circuit that is odd

Done, voltage is zero :-O
I measured the other board as well (the one I think I fried) and it shows alternatively 0 and 0.1 V.

hmm - the battery circuit seems also damaged? not sure what happened here...did you perhaps plug in the wrong battery to both pieces?

Re: Did I break the battery circuit?
I’m positive I didn’t plug the wrong battery on this board. The closest that battery got was laying unplugged underneath the board while I was fitting the case. I’ll look carefully at the circuit for any broken or missing parts...

Re: Did I break the battery circuit?
These are closeup pictures of the two boards... I can’t spot anything wrong on them, but my eye is not so expert.
The board I plugged the wrong battery to is the one with the components attached.
The only other thing I could think about is that I got them both from the same distributor in Italy (who is now out of them!) and judging by the software version on these and other Adafruit boards I got from them, they could be a couple of years old....

Re: Did I break the battery circuit?
Today I read again the board primary guide and I understand the “BAT” pin carries the battery voltage when a battery is plugged in... so it should be zero with no battery hooked, shouldn’t it?

Re: Did I break the battery circuit?
The output of the charger is also connected to BAT.

Ok! Did you have a chance to look at the pictures of the boards that I posted earlier? Maybe you can spot some damaged parts?
I’m not even sure where the charging circuit is...

Hard to tell, but the 5-legged part sort of between the reset button and NeoPixel is the charger chip and looks like it might be discoloured/damaged.
