Advice on power supply for RPi screen

Post by zara2355 »

Hello-

im hoping to get a little advice on what PS to choose for my project. i am using a RPi 3B+ and using a HDMI 4 Pi display, no touch 800x400.
https://www.adafruit.com/product/1934

On the Adafruit page it says that it can be powered using 5-24V. Im curious, how should I determine what PS to use with the display? I suppose i could just go with the 24V, but Im not really sure what benefits/draw-backs are.

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks in advance

According to the product description you linked,
simply connect a 5-12VDC adapter to the 2.1mm center-positive DC jack, then connect a digital video source to one of the ports . Voilà, a display!
I think you would be OK using the same power supply as the RPi for simplicity as a start.

Thanks!

I guess my question is really "why" use one voltage over another?

Aside from cost, is there any good reason for using 5V vs 9V vs 12V vs 24V?

I have not researched the screen but I think the screen has a regulator and is able to use the voltage range you need for the other parts of your project.

We do not design these in-house. But from looking at the components on the board, it looks like there is a switch-mode-regulator which can derive the necessary internal voltages from a range of supply voltages.

That said, voltage regulators tend to be less efficient at the extremes of their operating range. And these appear to work best with a 9v-12v supply: https://learn.adafruit.com/hdmi-ubergui ... iver-board

Ok, cool, that makes sense. Looks like 9-12V it is!

Thanks everyone!
