Slamtec RPILidar can't be detected

Hi,

I've purchased a rpilidar a1m8 on adafruit, and is having trouble detecting it after plugging in the microusb cable. I noticed there's a LED on the USB adaptor(the included small board) but it is not turned on. I've tried 3 different computers with different operating systems yet not one can see it in COM(in windows), or /dev/ttyUSB0 on ubuntu and raspi. What should I try?

Have you been able to use the same USB cables for data transfer with other hardware?

Let's just focus on the Pi setup as that is what the Adafruit guides are based on.
