TLC59711 to drive RGB strips with common GND and pulsed +5V lines?

Post by PinballShoppe »

I'm trying to repair some old DMX lighting panels that use analogue RGB strips which require a common GND and three lines of pulsed +5V. This is effectively the reverse of normal dimmed RGB LED strips that use a common + voltage and then pulse the GND to dim each channel. Would it be possible to use the TLC59711 board to do this? I suspect not, but the board is so small and cost effective that I'd love to use it - it would save me untold hours of soldering breadboards with transistors & resistors.

Max output per channel is 60mA. Not enough to drive a strip of any significant length.

Good point. These are short strips however - 8 LEDs of each colour in each strip (24 LEDs per strip), and four strips per lighting panel.

A typical small LED needs about 15-20mA for maximum brightness. With 8 in parallel and 60mA max, each one would be seeing about 7.5mA. That would be enough to light them up. Just not quite to the max.
