Monitoring & logging DC current

Post by spiney »

I have an electric car. I would like to monitor and log the current from the 12 volt battery without opening the battery contacts. (Milliamps to perhaps 20 amps.)
Is there any sensor which can do this and provide signal to an arduino processor. Some Hall effect gadget?
Hyundai have put a tiny resistance in series with the negative terminal for some nefarious purpose. I don't know the value, but it would probably be unwise to piggy-back on this resistance.

We have several current sensor breakouts. All use a sense resistor in series with the current flow and measure the current by the voltage drop (Ohm's Law).

There are hall-effect sensors that measure current by the magnetic field. We do not carry any of that type of current sensor.
