MPM3160 and Pi Pico magic smoke

Post by RiPont »

As a newbie developing something I wish to use in an automative (i.e. 12V DC) context, I have managed to let the magic smoke out of 2 Pi Pico Ws and 1 MPM3160 buck converter.

While this was entirely my own fault, it has led me to a product idea...

Adafruit, please make a version of the MPM3160 or a standalone 5V overcurrent protection breakout with an LED, a piezo buzzer, and a replaceable fuse. If the input voltage ever goes above 5V, it buzzes and lights the LED. If the current is more than is safe for pico/ESP32/arduino/etc., the fuse blows. Even better if it can simply cut any over-voltage from ever being delivered to the microcontroller.

The idea being that you always put it inline from the buck converter to VSYS, at least when prototyping, and it provides protection from user error when dealing with mixed voltages.
