Camera module Vs. 3

Post by cfellows »

Hello,

I just received my new camera module Vs.3 (Order number 3021282-8930984339) and it was dead on arrival. I tried it on two different Raspberry Pis where both my older camera modules Vs.1 and Vs. 2 both work perfectly. I checked and rechecked the ribbon cable and how it seats in the pi. After some on-line checking it seems I may have a bad camera board.
Please advise. - Cliff

What was checked here? What exactly is being done to provide an indication that the camera is "bad"?

The Pi camera stuff has changed in recent years. It is based on different underlying software:

Are you following current documentation for using the camera?

I tested the camera module v3 on both my Pi's and using the command "vcgencmd get_camera" I get a supported=1, detected=0 response.
My two older camera modules v1 & v2 both work on both Pi's.
The ribbon cable looks fine. No debris on the contact points and no visible damage to the cable. I re-seated it several times.
Any other things I can do?

This still sounds like it's potentially just a result of the changes with the v3 camera.

The v3 camera is not supported with the older software interface.

What OS version are you running on the Pi's?

Have you tried using one of the newer libcamera based apps that work with the v3 camera?

I'm installing the latest version of Raspian OS on my model B V2 as I type this. The current OS did not use libcamera.
The software I use to stream my camera is "RPi Cam Web Interface" and it has been running flawlessly and continuously for about 5 years. Should I consider another app for streaming?
Thank you..

In general, you'll most likely need to update how you interact with the V3 camera hardware (and even the previous camera hardware) if updating to the latest Raspberry Pi OS release.

Checkout this blog post from Raspberry Pi for general discussion on the change:
https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/an-ope ... libcamera/

To test basic camera functionality, be sure to follow the Raspberry Pi's documentation linked above - i.e. try using one of the new libcamera command line tools.

Thank you for your help.
The "Bullseye" installation was the solution. The camera works!
Now I have to find a way to stream the camera to see it remotely. The "RPi Cam Web Interface" software does not support the libcamera stack.
