Talking from one pico to 4 others
Is it possible for one pico to talk to 4 others? Like daisy chaining uart? I have a robotic arm project idea and in my head that would have 4 encoded motors and what made sense to me was to use a pico to for each motor to handle position and speed and then use one pico to tell those four what they need to do, but I don't see an obvious solution for one controller to talk to 4 others with circuitpython.

The Pico W has WiFi so problem solved right? You can run a webserver one one and pull data from it with the other 4.

If it is possible to do a task with one controller that would probably be better than using 5. It is not clear to me why adding 4 boards would be necessary. Would the Maker Pi help remove the additional controllers?

If you really do need a bunch of boards and do not want to use WiFi consider a single Raspberry Pi 4 with 4x Picos plugged in via USB. The Pi can have a collection Python script running to send and receive data to the slave Picos
