Defective Anemometer out of box

Post by kc3qh »

Just purchased this on March 15. Invoice # 3037307, Order # 3037307-7831177694. Using it on a Arduino wind speed indicator.
I doubled check my sketch and wiring and all is correct. Using 9 volt power source for power but the Data line seems very high (8 volts) and never changes with rotation of vanes. The wind speed always indicates 240 MPH on comm port running the software.

I think it is a defective one. What my next step ? Return ?

I hope Adafruit team will contact you soon. I used the same anemometer once. I guess you soldered 3 male to male jumpers with the 3 anemometer cables to connect them to Arduino. I suggest you check the continuities of all the jumper wires. A loose connection or accidental short circuit can create such problems.

Please post a photo of your setup showing how everything is connected.

Here is what I am using ? The unit is defective. The plug was already attached to unit. No wiring mistakes.

Thanks. We need a photo of your actual setup to confirm general wiring and connections.

Here is my layout and a copy of the Com Port Data. I hope this is the last hoop I need to jump thru before I can send this back for one that works.
Thanks

Thanks for the photo.
Data line seems very high (8 volts) and never changes with rotation of vanes.
How is the voltage output of the anemometer being measured?
The wind speed always indicates 240 MPH on comm port running the software.
Are you also checking the raw A0 values here? Just to make sure it's not something with whatever code is computing wind speed.

The Ao line is also 8 volts. If I remove the Anemometer and just supply it with 9 volts. The Data line reads 8 volts whether rotating or still. The unit has an issue.

The Ao line is also 8 volts.
How is voltage being measured though? The initial reading is going to be raw ADC counts. So there is potential software issue if only a voltage reading is being used as an indicator. Is voltage being computed correctly?

Do you have a multimeter that could be used to measure the anemometer signal wire directly?

The anemometer has 3 leads. 1-Blue=Data Line, 2-Brown=VCC Line & 3-Black=Grnd.
The Brown lead is connected to 9 volts,Black to Grnd & Blue is being measured with a Fluke 86. The Blue wire has 8 volts on it.
Here is a suggestion. You should have one there. measure the thing they way I did and see if you get the same results. This unit is bad.
The Uno is not bad, the sketch is not bad. The unit is bad.
I am tired of trying to get any warranty from you guys and feel I have been taken for about 60.00. I will make sure I post my disappointment with my associates and will never buy anything from Adafruit .
Next stop Amazon. I see they have the same Anemometer for 40.00 and warranty.
Thanks for nothing.

Harry, Sorry for the trouble you were having. I don't have one here but, if you tested it unconnected to anything else and were getting these readings it is probably broken. Contact [email protected] with a link to this thread and they will refund or replace it, your choice. We try to analyze the trouble and get you the best outcome but, as you know, electronics can be tricky and sometimes the problem is with ancillary devices.

Thanks for the reply. I was getting a bit frustrated with the return policy but It is what it is. Since you are going to replace the unit I could not be more satisfied.
If the unit would have cost me 5.00 all would have been forgotten and I would have purchased another and the bad one in the bit bucket.
The link has been sent off to support & they have already replied and that part of the replacement was rather speedy.
Thanks and forgive my impatience with the warranty system.

Harry

For what it is worth, I am very happy with mine. Good luck with your new one.
