Darksaber Button not doing anything

Post by CptSchnauzbart »

Hi guys

I am totally new to prop making with electronics. I want to build the Darksaber. Well I already built it, soldered everything, LEDs and Sound working great but my Button is not doing anything. I am using a just blue LED Button from Amazon. I connected the NC and the C port to G and EN on the PropMakerWing. I wired all 4 parts of the LED but only used the V+ and Blue to connect to my Button because it can only light up in blue. LED is always on with my Button but no function at all... I hope I can get some help here.
Thats my Button btw https://www.amazon.de/dp/B09JZH2C32?psc ... ct_details

Thx a lot

Your wiring matches the project. I suggest you start by checking that your wiring is correct. And check the soldering.

Here is a photo of my wiring. I guess it should be correct. I tried a different button but still not working. As soon as I connect power, the neopixels start to glow, sound is working and the button LED is on all the time no matter if I push it or not.

Please post a clear closeup of the button connections to ground and EN. It sounds like a connection problem. Have you verified that the button works as expected?

That’s my wiring for the button. Polarity doesn’t matter i was told.

You are correct, it's a simply switch; it doesn't have polarity. Hmm... the soldering on the EN/GND connections looks a mess.

Again, have you verified that the button works?

How can I verify that the button works ? I know it’s my first time doing that kind of stuff. Don’t know how to solder pretty xD

OK, let's recap.
- When you connect power, the saber turns on when it should wait for the button to be pressed to disconnect C/NC
- pressing the button does nothing.

That sounds like the button either isn't working or isn't connected. It's more likely that it isn't connected.

What happens if you connect the C & NC on the switch with a wire? If it doesn't turn off the saber, then there's a connection problem.

What happens if you connect the G and E connection on the PropMaker board with a wire? That should definitely turn off the saber.

Well so I tried both connections now. Cable to c and nc on the button as well as cable directly on the propmaker. Nothing happening. Strangely if I connect a cable on the button NC and LED it turns off the saber. Accidentally connected it.. not intentionally btw xD

I don’t know if that means something for anything. Don’t know if the button works in this situation because I was afraid I could damage something with this connection.

OK. I suggest you remove and rebuild the switch circuit. I.e. the wiring between the switch and the E/G on the propmaker.

As you rebuild, test at each step.
- connecting E & G with a wire (nothing else connected) should turn off the saber.
- Add the wire (try to do the solder neatly). Connecting the end of the wires should turn off the saber.
- connect the switch. In one position the saber should be off. In the other position it should be on. A single press of the switch should switch between positions.

Sorry for the delay. I tried removing the whole button setup and connecting EN and G with a wire. Nothing happened… don’t know what’s wrong.

Something happened. With G and E *NOT* connected everything should be on. With them connected, it should be off. Is that what happens? Or do you mean that everything is on regardless whether G and E are connected or not?

Exactly. Everything is always on. Nothing happening if I connect these two.

Hmm. I'd like you to pop the propmaker wing off the feather and try connection the Feather's EN (labelled on the bottom of the Feather) pin to ground (and not). When connected to ground the board should be off, when not connected the board should be on.
