I tried accessing the BME280 through I2C but I can't get it to work. I tried several GPIO pins but the BME280 is not recognised. So I wonder whether the BME280 (which is new) is working at all.
Is there a way to test the proper working of the sensor without connecting it to a board?

Re: BME280
Which processor are you using to read the sensor? Is it a Raspberry pi or an Arduino?

Re: BME280
Try running an I2C scan to see if the BME280 address can be detected:
