We had a professional development on using a stream deck in the classroom. As a computer science teacher I'd rather build my own. I was looking at the trellis but was wondering if anyone had tried a project like this. The difference between the stream deck and the trellis is the stream deck shows images rather than colors.
I'd like to make it in such a way that I can share the design and construction with students so they can design and build their own.

The Adafruit MacroPad might be a reasonable compromise. Manual buttons with text OLED and lots of library support.
If the graphics are important a TFT can be used to create a "Touch Deck".

I love both of those suggestions, I have a macropad from an Adabox that is not being used at the moment.
Thinking a touch screen TFT can expand the options even include visual links between buttons.
